What’s on Winter 2026

There is plenty to discover at Albany’s Historic Whaling Station this winter, with a vibrant program of exhibitions, artist workshops, family activities and maritime-themed events running throughout June and July.

Now open, Turbulence by artist Lizzie Riley explores turbulence, drift and the arrival of calm through fibre textile and mixed-media kinetic sculptures inspired by wind, water and movement. On display until 23 June, the exhibition reflects on both visible and invisible forces, where movement softens into serenity and contemplation.

July welcomes two new exhibitions. Cats & Dogs: All at Sea (1 July – 30 September) is a free photographic exhibition featuring historic images of sailors and their beloved animal companions. Originally developed by the Australian National Maritime Museum, the exhibition highlights the important role animals played aboard ships, providing companionship and comfort during long voyages. Visitors are also invited to contribute a photo of their own much-loved pet to become part of the exhibition display.

Opening on 4 July, artist-in-residence Erin Coates: The Boneyard explores the intersection of personal history, Western Australia’s whaling past, and the relationship between humans and animals. Developed through a residency at Albany’s Historic Whaling Station, the exhibition combines sculpture, installation and imagery to create a powerful reflection on memory, extinction and regeneration.

Visitors can further engage with Coates’ artistic practice through two special workshops. The Graphite Drawing Masterclass on Friday 3 July focuses on observational drawing, composition and shading techniques, while the Anatomical Collage and Graphite Workshop on Sunday 5 July explores creative collage and drawing inspired by human and animal biology.

The July school holidays offer a range of family-friendly activities. From 4–19 July, children can take part in the Stowaway Hide and Seek Activity, searching for hidden shipboard stowaways throughout the site. The Ocean Builders: 3D Marine Craft Activity (6–10 July) invites young visitors to create and decorate their own marine creature to take home.

Young creatives aged 13 and over can also join Paws at Sea: Miniature Felt Workshop on 14 and 16 July, where participants will learn the basics of needle felting while crafting their own seafaring cat or dog companion.

As part of the Albany Maritime Festival, the Station will host Sea Song & Shanty performances on 11 and 12 July, featuring She Shants and the Mandurah Mariners, bringing maritime music, storytelling and seafaring spirit to life.

With experiences for all ages, Albany’s Historic Whaling Station is the perfect destination to explore art, maritime history, creativity and culture throughout the winter season.
