With a 12 metre wingspan the Cessna 337 spotter plane takes pride of place within our new permanent exhibition, Whales From The Air, opening 26 July 2024.
Discover the advancements in historical whaling made by using aircraft, while comparing historical whaling practices and modern conservation practices, to see how the use of aerial surveillance has changed over the years. Read the spotter pilots’ personal stories, and learn how planes and drones are now used for whale conservation. There are more whales shot today then there ever were while whaling, today however, it is with a camera.
This exhibition project has been made possible by the Maritime Museums of Australia Project Support Scheme (MMAPSS). The Scheme is administered by the Australian National Maritime Museum on behalf of the Australian Government and provides grants of up to $15,000 in-kind support to not-for-profit organisations to help display and conserve objects of national and historical maritime significance. Since the Scheme commenced in 1995, more than $2.4 million has been provided to support 535 projects and over 75 internships across Australia.
Albany’s Historic Whaling Station’s mission is to “bring stories of Albany’s diverse past to life”, and this project utilises a key artefact from our collection to enhance the onsite experience. Whales from the Air enriches our ongoing storyline of Albany’s whaling heritage, linking the evolving narrative of aviation with our profound fascination with whales.
Our team are delighted to unveil Whales from the Air, which not only showcases a remarkable piece of history, but also opens a new space in our museum, and we invite you to come explore this unique and fascinating chapter of Albany’s past.
Whales from the Air is NOW OPEN and entry is included with your Historic Whaling Station admission ticket.
