Join artist Alex Gerrard as she takes a Victorian Era pastime and transforms it into an immersive art experience. During this workshop you will learn how to prepare seaweed specimens and create your own framed seaweed art to take home.
Saturday 2 July 2022
10am – 12pm
This two-hour creative workshop highlights the diverse and unique marine flora of our South Coast region, featuring hands on techniques developed centuries ago. Connect with the exquisite natural beauty of local seaweed and learn how to collect, prepare and display specimens, with the guidance of artist Alex Gerrard.
The workshop will commence with a guided beach walk, where you learn how to find, identify and sustainably gather local seaweeds (weather permitting).
Moving back to the workspace, Alex will run through the equipment and supplies used to press seaweed. Together you will walk through how to press specimens, before trying the process out yourself with your personal seaweed press to create your own pressed seaweed frame.
All material are provided, plus you will receive your own seaweed press to take home to continue your new skills.
No previous experience is required, and this workshop is suitable for ages 14 years and over.
Bookings are essential as space is limited.
This event is part of the Albany Maritime Festival 2022. Albany will come alive with an array of different events across the month of July, from food, culture, creative workshops, art exhibitions and more, there really is something for everyone during this year’s winter celebration.
