A Whale of Recognition for Len Smith
Albany thanks local for lifetime of community support.
Executive Chairman of The Jaycees Community Foundation Inc, Peter Snow, presented retiring proprietor of Albany’s Comfort Inn, Len Smith with membership of the Historic Whaling Station’s Chaser Club at a special function. The special function, convened by local community leaders and held at ATC Worksmart, recognised Mr Smith lengthy contribution to the Albany and regional community by way of sponsorship and his voluntary roles on many boards and committees.
In making the presentation, Mr Snow said: “Albany is lucky to have had such a wonderful and generous contributor to the local community over such a long period of time. Len has supported our whaling station project from the very start nearly 40 years ago and continued to do so until his recent retirement. He has become a great friend to us all and, although we have previously recognised his business, the presentation of the Chaser Certificate acknowledges his personal contribution.”
At the community function, Mr Smith paid tribute to his late wife Maisie, who looked after the motel administration allowing him to become so heavily involved in the community. “We made a great team and I owe my ability to be involved in the community to her,” Mr Smith said.
Apart from the many awards he had received, Mr Smith said that he had been privileged to meet so many people who, like him, shared a belief in contributing time and resources to their community.
